P.O.W.E.R. Time, or Providing Opportunities with Effective Resources and Time, is a program created for Farmingdale High School students who struggle in their classes and need guidance to complete their work. P.O.W.E.R. Time is a great opportunity to get free tutoring and get a lot of work done.
So what is it like at P.O.W.E.R. Time? Teachers of several subjects stay after school to help students with topics such as college essays, algebra, global history, learning a new language, research papers, and even just problems they have in life that they can’t solve. Teachers and staff, including Mrs. Kelly, Mrs. Oldham, Mrs. Danyko, Mr. Collica, Mrs. Miltenberg, Mrs. Rosenthal, Mr. Shanley, Mr. Falcones, Dr. Sperduto, Mrs. Greenberg, and Mr. Glasscott, along with assistant principal Mrs. DiPiero, have been working at P.O.W.E.R. Time to help struggling students take control of their academics and help them succeed. According to Mrs.Kelly, “P.O.W.E.R. time allows us to help students in other classes. It’s good to get another teacher’s perspective. It benefits students that are nervous to raise their hand in class and students that are not confident in writing their essays. We work one-on-one with the students and provide them the help they need. The idea of P.O.W.E.R. Time is to give students a jump start and move them into the right direction.”
Another benefit of this program is that the computer lab is open, where you can access websites like Google Classroom, Google Docs, and Castle Learning. It is a good opportunity for people who do not have access to a computer and a printer at home to complete and print out their work.
If you are stressing out and have problems, Dr. Sperduto, a school psychologist, is roaming around to also provide counseling. “My role in helping out with this program is to provide comfort and talk to the students who are scared to graduate, who cannot articulate their emotions, that have test anxiety, or students who are overwhelmed with their tasks. I try to build up the students confidence and motivation for them to join clubs and start their career planning.”
There are about 20-30 students that stay after for this program each week. An estimate of 400 students have been using or used P.O.W.E.R. Time to help them excel in their studies. Furthermore, this program is all-round great opportunity to take advantage of. P.O.W.E.R. Time is located in the Farmingdale High School Library and occurs every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 2:20-3:20, so come feel the power of P.O.W.E.R. Time!
