Star Wars Burnout?
October 10, 2017
Ever since Disney bought Star Wars back in 2012, they have planned to make several movies, including spin-off movies such as 2016’s Rogue One, a Young Han Solo movie, an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, and even a Jabba the Hutt movie. However, for some fans of the series, this might just be too much.
When Disney first purchased Lucasfilm, they announced from the start that they would be making new movies, referring to the Sequel Trilogy, which started with The Force Awakens and will continue with The Last Jedi. Disney has also started a separate spin-off series known as the “Anthology” series. Those movies include Rogue One and the Young Han Solo movie. However, there are a lot more movies planned. According to Variety, “Some of the other standalones in development include a Jabba the Hutt story and a Boba Fett movie.” There is also an Obi Wan movie planned. While it may be exciting to see main characters like Han Solo and Obi Wan again, I think some of these movies might not be a good idea, as Jabba the Hutt is not as popular as some of the other characters. On the other hand, it is nice to see secondary characters getting their time to shine. Honestly, I mostly care if the movies are enjoyable and well-written, no matter how many there are, as Disney has already proven they can release multiple films in a series in a year with the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). However, I still have some doubts, as some of these movies, such as the Han Solo movie, have been going through “development hell,” with director changes, re-shoots, and cuts from the movie. Gamesradar called the film “a mess,” saying the movie had “last minute acting coaches,” and that the former directors Lord and Miller had “zero creative control.” This is my issue with these movies–namely, that they are being rushed and that the films may suffer as a result. Since the Han Solo movie is not out yet, I will wait to see if the final product ends up being any good.
I am fine with Disney releasing more Star Wars movies that are spin-offs. It is a way to see old characters in new ways, and since Disney has done a good job with the MCU, I have some faith in them here. However, the conditions on set for some of the films makes me nervous for the future of Star Wars.
