Farmingdale Gives Back this Thanksgiving
November 17, 2017
Nothing makes you think about how thankful you are for what you have or about the people in your community quite like the holidays. The Farmingdale community always steps up starting in November with numerous collections. Farmingdale High School’s Key Club is a club all about community service. It is no surprise that they become more involved with Thanksgiving right around the corner. Every year Key Club donates eight to ten complete Thanksgiving meals to families in our community in need. Groups of about seven students split a list of items amongst themselves to donate to the meal. They then get together to decorate the box festively. Groups go all out drawing their very best turkeys, and the group with the best box wins ten hours of community service that goes towards the mandatory 50 hours of service per year.
It is a very generous fundraiser that should make everyone proud of the Farmingdale community. All of the materials for each family to cook the typical Thanksgiving sides are included, such as mashed potatoes, carrots, corn, cranberries, sweet potatoes, string beans, and cornbread. In addition to this, the East Kiwanis club donates a Stop and Shop gift card for each family to purchase their Thanksgiving Turkey.
The holiday season is quickly approaching and it’s important to think of the people in your community that might need help this year. There are many other food drives right here in Farmingdale High School for which you could show your support. Hunger Doesn’t Vacation is collecting soup and crackers for the month of November which goes straight to kids within our district; you can drop items off in the main office, Green and White shop, athletic office, and health office. In addition to this, if you are passing Stop and Shop in the next few weeks, on most Sundays there are collections from various programs in Farmingdale that you can easily donate to by bringing them a few items on your way out of the store.
