Disney Rules the Galaxy
February 1, 2018
Disney is one of the biggest entertainment companies in the world, and the owner of several large franchises including Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and Frozen. With Disney wanting to make their own streaming service after leaving Netflix, they still needed more franchises to fully launch their service. Disney also wanted the rights to the Marvel characters that they do not own, like the X-Men, Deadpool, and the Fantastic Four. Since the rights were owned by Fox, Disney decided to buy the rights to not just those characters, but the whole entertainment part of the company.
When Disney bought the rights from Fox, they specifically bought the entertainment portion of the company, 21st Century Fox. The purchase includes the film rights to the X-Men, Deadpool, and the Fantastic Four, which means that Disney can incorporate them into their Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise. They also will own the full rights to A New Hope, the first Star Wars movie made. When Disney bought Lucasfilm, that was the only movie in the Star Wars series that they did not own, but now, they have the rights to those movies. Disney will also own the home media rights to the movies, but they have not announced anything yet. Disney will also get the rights to Fox’s own franchises, like Alien, Avatar, Predator, and Ice Age. Since Disney already built an Avatar Land at Disney World, they already have some familiarity with the franchises. Not only will Disney own the Fox movies, they will own their T.V. shows as well. This includes popular shows such as The Simpsons, Modern Family, and Family Guy. However, Disney will not acquire all of Fox’s assets. The Fox network will still be owned by them, as well as the infamous Fox News, and Fox Business. Disney will acquire the FX Network, however, and the regional Fox Sports. Speaking of streaming, since Fox already owned part of Hulu, Disney will now own that part. Disney may use that to expand their way into streaming, as Disney already has the Marvel Runaways show on Hulu. Disney is ending their relationship with Netflix, as they are pulling their movies from the service. Only the Marvel Netflix shows, like Daredevil, will remain on Netflix. Hulu could use Disney, as apart from the award-winning Handmaiden’s Tale, and the aforementioned Runaways, they do not have many recognizable shows.
Even though Disney and Fox have set up the bulk of the deal, they may still need to iron out the smaller details. The actual deal itself has not gone through yet, as it has to be approved completely by both parties. Regardless of the details, this is just another step in Disney’s goal to dominate the world of entertainment.
