Showtime Mahomes

The NFL season has begun and one person has been lighting up the league; that person is Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes was drafted last year 10th overall by the Kansas City Chiefs. For the whole 2017-18 season, Mahomes sat behind starter Alex Smith who started off the season strong. The Chiefs, however, ended up falling short and being eliminated in the first round by the Tennessee Titans. In the offseason Alex Smith would be traded to the Washington Redskins in exchange for Kendall Fuller and a third round pick. For the Chiefs and their organization this meant one thing: it was the start of the Mahomes era in Arrowhead.

The Chiefs season opened up against the Chargers, who were many people’s pick to win the AFC West. Mahomes would quickly silence those people as he and speedy receiver Tyreek Hill connected for a 58 yard score in the first quarter. He and his offense would connect for 3 more touchdowns in a 38-28 route of the Chargers. Mahomes would finish with 256 yards, 4 touchdowns and with a QB rating of 127.5. Mahomes said of the performance that his team “left a lot out on the field.”

The next game would be in Pittsburgh at Heinz field. They were facing a Steelers team that was coming off of a tie against Cleveland and who was playing without their star Le’veon Bell. Mahomes and the Chiefs came out bombing on the Chiefs defense, scoring three first-quarter touchdowns, silencing the crowd at Heinz Field. The Steelers would not go away quietly though, as they followed up with three 2nd quarter touchdowns of their own to even the game up at 21 going into halftime. The teams traded scores in the third quarter, but when the quarter was coming to a close the red hot offense of Kansas City drove down the field to put a touchdown on the board, giving Mahomes his 5th touchdown in only the third quarter, with just over three minutes left to give the Chiefs a 35-28 lead heading into the fourth quarter.  The Chiefs would close out the game in the fourth with one more touchdown for Mahomes and Hill and a 42-37 win over the Steelers. Patrick Mahomes would finish the game with an incredible stat-line of 326 yards with 6 touchdowns and only throwing 5 incomplete passes.

The Chiefs next game would come in Arrowhead against the 49ers for the Chiefs home opener. This would be a matchup of two the NFL’s young gun quarterbacks and it was clear who the victor was early in this matchup. Kareem Hunt would start the game strong for the Chiefs offense, scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter. The high-powered Chiefs offense would not let up as Mahomes would take over in the second quarter, throwing for three touchdowns and giving Kansas City a 35-10 lead going into halftime. The Chiefs would win the contest 38-27 and Mahomes would yet again impress many by finishing with 314 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Although we have not even hit the first quarter on the season yet, Mahomes is the clear frontrunner for MVP and many other awards. Mahomes has already broken many legends’ records with his 13 touchdowns in three weeks. The Chiefs fans are very excited about their young QB and they have a right to be as he has drawn many comparisons to Hall of Famer Brett Favre. If those comparisons are true, Mahomes will be great in this league for many years.
