Hurricane Dorian, which first struck the Bahamas on Sunday, September 1st, continued to batter the tropical island for almost two days. The full devastating extent of the storm is only now being discovered with over 40 people dead, and with many more missing, the number will surely rise.
Although this storm has laid waste to the Bahamas and destroyed so many lives, it has inspired many acts of courage, bravery, and kindness. For example, according to CNN, an unnamed man spent $49,285.70 at a Costco and “most of that came from paying $450 a pop for 100 generators” to send to the Bahamas. Even with all of the support and outreach that is pouring in, the recovery is still going to be very slow and take a very long time. According to several news sources, “Hurricane Dorian was one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes in recorded history,” and unfortunately, this came as a bit of a shock; the storm was much more powerful than anyone expected it would be and no one was properly prepared or ready for this storm to hit.
Overall, the effects of hurricane Dorian are catastrophic, devastating, and widespread. It will take years for the Bahamas to return to its former glory but, with the help of many kind people at home and in the affected areas, this recovery is already well underway.
