Plastic vs. Metal

Emma Best, Staff Writer

If you had a choice between metal water bottles and plastic water bottles, which would you choose? I would choose a metal water bottle. Using metal water bottles, straws, and utensils help to save the environment. You might not realize this, but whenever you use anything that is mostly made up of plastic, it’s not getting disposed of properly. Almost 8 million tons of plastic is being dumped into the ocean each year, killing many animals on both land and sea. For example, sea turtles that eat jellyfish may accidentally eat a plastic bag thinking it’s a jellyfish. The plastic is getting washed up onto beaches, causing birds to get stuck in it and die, and other animals are eating it, thinking it’s food.

This problem has affected the environment to a point where we can’t bring it back to the way it was, but there are still ways to help so the environment doesn’t get ruined anymore than it already is. For example, we can use metal utensils to help lessen the amount of plastic being dumped into the ocean. Buying reusable metal water bottles and straws not only helps the environment, but also helps you save money. You won’t have to buy a new water bottle every time you are thirsty, you instead can bring a water bottle that already has water in it that you filled yourself. You can also bring reusable bags when you go shopping. I find these bags are more durable than plastic bags.

Getting these products may seem like a pain, but it’s for a good cause. In the long run, using metal utensils and bottles, as well as reusable bags, not only saves you money, but also helps the environment. It’s a win/win, so why not?
