The GSA at FHS
February 25, 2022
The GSA Club, or the Genders and Sexualities Alliance, was started about four or five years ago at Farmingdale High School. This club is a student-run organization that unites LGBTQ+ and allied youth to build community and organize around issues impacting them in their schools and communities. This club was formed at FHS to form a safe space for LGBTQ+ students, while also doing acts of service for our school and community.
The current president is senior Mia Reichle, who works closely with club advisors Mr. Sayers, Mrs. Kelly, and Mrs. Smith, to plan events. Mr. Sayers states, “This school year, the GSA participated in the Fall Festival hosted by the Go Green Club. Additionally, the club participated in a joint event with REAL Harmony called the Holiday Haven on Friday, December 17th, 2021.” GSA plans to organize more events in the near future.
Club members and advisors represent the LGBTQ+ community inside and outside of the club. In our interview, Mr. Sayers, went on to say, “I identify as gay, and I represent the gay community by sharing my family. My husband and I have been married since 2011 and we have adopted two children together. Our daughter just turned ten and our son will be six in April.” Many others in this club are part of the LGBTQ+ community, while some are there to support. You can go to this club anytime, hangout with friends and talk, while also being educated by your peers.
