Chiefs Score Late to Win Super Bowl LVII
February 14, 2023
The Chiefs came back to get the win, but not without some controversy.
The Chiefs, led by Patrick Mahomes, won a thrilling Super Bowl LVII by a score of 38-35.
Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs to a second-half 10 point comeback, the second largest Super Bowl comeback ever. In total, Kansas City scored 24 points in the second half to lead them to the win.
With this Super Bowl win, Mahomes has become the youngest starting quarterback ever to have won two Super Bowls. He also has become the first player to win both the SuperBowl and League MVP in the same season since 1999.
Jalen Hurts and the Eagles played an amazing game as well. They were a large reason why this was the third-highest scoring Super Bowl in NFL history.
The extremely controversial James Bradberry holding penalty ultimately sealed the game because it allowed the Chiefs to run the clock out, not giving the Eagles enough time to get more than a play in. After the game, Bradberry stated, “It was a holding. I tugged his jersey. I was hoping they would let it slide.”
There was more than just the holding controversy, however. The field on which the Super Bowl was played has come under fire. Although the NFL actually spent two years growing the grass for the Super Bowl play surface and spent $800,000 to completely install it, many players were slipping and falling. The quality of NFL fields has been a large focal point while these playing surface problems keep occurring.
“I’m not going to lie, it was the worst field that I’ve ever played on… it was very disappointing,” Eagles defensive end Hasson Reddick stated at the end of the game. He went on to say, “It’s the NFL, you would think it would be better so we could get some better play, but it is what is.”
During last year’s Super Bowl, Odell Beckham Jr. tore his ACL on an innocent five yard route. He was on the painted NFL logo at the fifty yard line which was reported to have been slippy to run on. Many believe that the slippy paint was the cause for his injury which made him miss not just the rest of last year’s Super Bowl, but all of this season.
Nevertheless, this year’s Super Bowl was amazing to watch and it was a great ending to another amazing NFL season. Seeing two great teams both play a great game is a sight to see, especially in a Super Bowl. From Patrick Mahomes injuring his right ankle and looking like he was done, to coming back and winning the Lombardi Trophy, this Super Bowl was packed with excitement from beginning to end.
