Are You Ready for Some Football?
October 19, 2016
With the NFL regular season starting on Sunday September 11th there are many questions that are still surrounding this season. Will the Patriots be able to continue their dynasty without Tom Brady for the first 4 games? Will Colin Kaepernick’s protest gain traction, or will it fall into obscurity? And as always there’s the big one, who will win Super Bowl 51? Some answers will be answered quickly but some we won’t know until February 5th.
Last season saw the emergence of future stars like Todd Gurley, Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota. Even though neither of them made the playoffs, they both had huge showcases of what they could do in future for their teams and for them, the future looks bright. This season, fans can expect the emergence of players like the Ram’s Jared Goff, The Eagles’s Carson Wentz, the Cowboy’s Ezekiel Elliott. Already Carson Wentz have already showed what he can do in week 1 when Wentz threw a touchdown in his opening drive. The Eagles went on to win that game against the Browns with Wentz throwing for 278 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Also this season, some huge names will be trying to bounce back from major injuries suffered last season. Players like Le’Veon Bell and Jamaal Charles who both tore their ACLs to end their season last year. The two Running backs are looked at as two of the NFL’s best players today, so it will be interesting to see how they bounce back from these serious injuries. Also Andrew Luck will be looking to bounce back from a lacerated kidney and a torn abdominal muscle. Last year he proved to be crucial to the Colts, as when he went down they ended the season with a record of 8-8.
To start off this year there are a handful of suspensions that have been handed out by the NFL for players. Players like Tom Brady, Marcell Dareus, and Le’Veon Bell all received suspensions that are being served to start off this season. Each of these players are leaving a huge hole in their team and Marcell Dareus has even been publicly shamed because of this suspension. The owner of the Buffalo Bills, Terry Pegula, actually came out and said that Dareus, “He chose to put himself first, before his teammates, coaches, rest of the organization, and the fans through his recent actions.”
This is a year of questions for the NFL as it always is, but there is one question that always stands above the rest. Who will win Super Bowl 51 on February 1st in Houston? Will the Broncos Repeat? Will Carson Wentz and Jared Goff begin their careers with success? Can Jamaal Charles and Le’Veon Bell rebound from a major injury? This should be an exciting year for the NFL and as always it should be fun to watch.
Week 4 Update:
4 weeks into the NFL season and already there have been major injuries and huge performances. Most recently Ben Roethlisberger had a huge game throwing for 5 touchdowns. Also Julio Jones and Matt Ryan had a historic game against the Carolina Panthers. Julio Jones caught for 300 Receiving yards and Matt Ryan threw for over 500 passing yards. They became the first duo to ever do that in NFL history. The Houston Texas are in big trouble as JJ Watt is now out for the season. Watt is arguably the best defensive end in football today and with his loss the Texans may have to look towards next season instead of this one. Already this season has been an extreme joy to watch and there are sure to be more huge performances and injuries to come.
Week 7 Update:
Going into week 7 the NFL season has taken shape and not only have some questions been answered, but some have also been added. With Dak Prescott playing like an elite QB, will the Cowboys risk their success with Tony Romo or continue to throw their trust into a rookie QB? In the first 6 games, Prescott has thrown 7 touchdowns and just 1 interception.
The Carolina Panthers’ loss in week 1 was an eye opener, but the fact that they are now 1-5 is just dreadful for a team that had just 1 loss last season. With injury troubles to the reigning MVP Cam Newton, the chances of the Panthers returning to the playoffs this year are slim to none.
The surprise team to this point has got to be the Buffalo Bills. Since starting their season on 0-2, they have not lost. Currently the Bills sit at 4-2 with the best point differential in the NFL, outscoring their opponents by 59 points. The Bills are looking to end the longest playoff drought in sports and if the playoffs ended today, they would be in.
The NFL has one more undefeated team left. The Minnesota Vikings are coming out of their bye week 5-0 and the fact that they are doing it without Teddy Bridgewater and Adrian Peterson is amazing. Sam Bradford went from irrelevance to star as he is leading the Vikings to a strong Super Bowl bid. This week Bradford visits his old team as the Vikings look to continue their undefeated season against the Eagles.
The NFL season has been a ton of fun to watch because not many things are going as expected. Who would’ve thought that the Jets and especially the Panthers would be 1-5, while the Vikings are 5-0. The season isn’t even halfway over, so there is still so much that can happen, but so far this season is shaping up to be an exciting one.
