Lady Dalers Roll Deep
January 10, 2017
The Lady Dalers basketball team is now 7-2. After a tough loss last season to Massapequa in the county semifinals, the team wanted to come out strong this year. The girls have been working hard this season with their best game so far over Roosevelt with a score of 48-19.
The game against Roosevelt was the first time the players connected as a team, said Sophomore Jax Gregorovic. Going into the game, the Lady Dalers were “pumped up and ready to play after our first loss, we didn’t look like zombies. We were moving the ball a lot throughout the game and we weren’t being selfish. The second quarter we only had one turnover,” said Gregorovic.
The team started off the season with a championship in the Hicksville Holiday Tournament. The game against Hicksville was close but the girls were not going to let it go. With a one point game with thirty seconds left, they kept the ball and scored the winning basket to win the championship. Junior Asiah Smikle won the tournament’s MVP award, while Senior Sam Huebner won a spot on the All-Tournament team. The tournament was an all-round team effort, using the team’s depth and athleticism to win.
When comparing the current team to last year’s team, Nicolena Spadalik commented, “I think we are going to go far this year. With a record of seven wins and only two losses this season I think we are going to go a long way.” After four years on varsity, all four seniors, Nicolena Spadalik, Cailee Perettine, Hailey Lospitalier, and Sam Huebner were named captains of the team. Sam Huebner said, “After reaching the semifinals last year and working hard in practice and workouts, the team is motivated and ready to have an even more successful season. Our team has depth and we are able to play almost our entire bench in each game.”
The team consists of two freshman, two sophomores, four juniors, and four seniors. The Lady Dalers expect to have their season end successfully, possibly with a trip to as far as the Nassau County Championship.
